The Territories

a map of the Irish Sea with territories labelled Leinster, Mannin, Meirionnydd, Wolfland and Worringfolk - and languages spoken in the respective territories Gaelic, Manx, Welsh, English and ScouseNot to scale. The boundaries are for general guidance only and are not exact.

In the years leading up to 2450AD there was a widespread resurgence in the use of native languages. Many place names reverted to their local versions.

The reader may be confronted with some unusual names and expressions. The glossary on page 395 provides some guidance particularly with Welsh, Irish and Manx words.

Prependix 1 – Time and Place

SlenderWolf Conflicts and Alliances is the first novel in a series of six, spanning the years 2450 to 2480AD. The Decimation of 2162AD, and The Great Famine which followed over the next few years, are already history.

Wolfland is now a highly successful territory, standing out as an inspiration to others who want to build robust societies.

At the heart of the territory is the city of Lancaster. The new harbour is further inland. It’s larger and it provides easy access to the sea. Shipbuilding and the maritime trade have led to a thriving, albeit small, capital city.

Wolfland is a massive territory extending from Carlisle to Ormskirk. Further to the south is the territory of Worringfolk, and over to the east, are the Pennites.

Life without oil, gas and coal, and with scarcely any electricity means that Lancaster is very different to the way it was in the old days. The whole world is different! No cars, no aircraft, no telecoms and no internet. Just lots of horses and lots of ships.

Climate change and rising sea levels decimated the low lying coasts, destroying some ports and towns, and forcing some people further inland. The top of Blackpool Tower remained visible for 200 years, but finally succumbed to the sea. In contrast, Ulverston on the edge of the Lake District, has again become a thriving port and a centre of trade.

Wolfland is people focussed. The Chamber is run by the ElderWolf and she’s determined to keep things in order with a government of the people for the people.
