A watercolour painting of the school teacher Michael Rafone. In his late twenties, he has a pleasant smile and looks like a decent bloke, well groomed, dark brown hair and deep chestnut eyes. He's wearing a black suit jacket and a white shirt, but no tie. In his late twenties, he has a pleasant smile and looks like a decent bloke. The image is labelled OpenMike which is the name he uses every week at the Noble Coliseum when he hosts Saturday Night Fun Night. A watercolour painting of school teacher Bob Charlton from the PE department. He’s 24 years old and his brown hair has a curly textured fringe with tapered sides. His deep rich brown eyes make him look quite attractive and he has an almost imperceptible smile. He’s wearing a bright red tie, a white shirt and a black suit jacket. The image is labelled Mr Charlton. A watercolour painting of the music teacher. An attractive lady in her late twenties with a polite, professional smile. She has long chestnut brown hair with a gentle wave, and delightful hazel coloured eyes. She is wearing tiny silver stud earrings, and a very thin silver necklace. The strap of her blue summer dress is visible over her left shoulder, and is obscured by her hair flowing across her right shoulder. Her skin is soft and natural, and she clearly takes pride in her appearance. The image is labelled Miss Fortune. pic

Broadland Park High School is a public sector school situated between Lancaster city centre and the River Lune. It’s 200 metres up the road from The Noble Coliseum. It caters for students from the ages of 11 to 16. In Wolfland, and in all the territories in the novel, there is no mainstream system of further education.

At 16 people become adults, and they go out and find work. Once people reach adulthood, they finish school on the 30th of June following their 16th birthday.

In some fields there’s a two tier system, and to reach the top, newcomers need to join an employer who has a Research Institute. Less than 5% of the population end up in the top tier, and secure a Diplôme Supérieur.

Governed by the Education and Community Affairs Ordinance which BrigadierHetherington laid out in the PenrithChronicles circa 2220AD (with help from headteacher Felicity “FeelyGood” Good) Broadland Park High resembles a UK comprehensive school from the 20th century, but with some uniquely modern twists on school subjects.

Modern Foreign Languages is now Modern Native Languages, because international travel is a thing of the past. All schools offer Welsh, and some also teach Manx and Irish.

D&T is called Woodwork again, and where possible Metalwork is taught.

New subjects include Engineering, Mechanics and Archery.

Wednesday afternoons are given over to recreational activities, with horse riding being as popular among boys as it is with girls. In a world with no motor cars, and no internet, there is perpetual fascination with horsemanship (in the way that cars were the big thing in the 20th century, and smart phones were the big thing in the 21st century). As soon as they turn 13, all teenagers aspire to gain their Horsemanship A Certificate which allows them to ride solo without being supervised.

A number of school departments have attained an important status in line with the nature of society in 2450AD.

Music & the performing arts. MissFortune, the head of the music department encourages everyone to find and develop their talents in order that the creative arts are well supplied with musicians and actors. Theatre companies and orchestras have taken the place of cinema and television.

MissFortune has helped many performers like Marcus Concordia (pianist), The Space Girls (singer/dancers) and AngryBard (kettle drums) find their station in life.

Mr Charlton’s PE department maintains the well equipped shcool gym. He’s also an advocate of team sports, principally cricket, hockey and dodge ball. The coveted Sports Team Kagoul is the only piece of branded school wear that looks anything like a uniform. Normally all the students wear a white T shirt and jeans, because these simple clothes are cheap and readily available. Hence all school kids look as is they are wearing a uniform even though they aren’t. But it does not distinguish Broadland Park High from Fairfield High School, nor any one of the four primary schools in Lancaster.

The term kagoul comes from Malay (originally cagoule in French) and it’s the adopted spelling due to the influence of Rudyard Kipling in modern day Wolfland. Major Hastings is a firm advocate of the Sports Team Kagoul having secured his in his school days, long before he became President of Lancaster Cricket Club.

Charlton-sensei also runs the karate dojo which meets twice per week, on Wednesday evenings in Broadland Park High School, and on Sunday mornings in The Noble Coliseum.

Mr Whitton, the head of Maths is also a keen supporter of the library and resources centre where people like HayWire learnt so much about engineering. Companies like Glasson Engineering, Skerton Dynamics and Wolfie Windy Water help to stage the annual interschools STEM challenge every Spring. Even the Wolfland Fire Service gets involved. They are all looking for potential recruits and the Garisson also puts a lot of effort into helping schools.

Mr Rafone is famous for his performance as OpenMike nearly every Saturday night at the Coliseum. He’s an all round good egg who upholds all the principles in the Civics text book The Penrith Moral Compass. In the school year 2450/51 his Year 11 tutor group includes NutJob and KristalClear, and The Space Girls Kayt and Conning.
