Steven (Steve) Hastings is a member of the Lancaster Garrison, overseeing the training of new recruits. Both a drill instructor and a PTI he is the quintessential commissioned officer in true British tradition. His shadow alone seems to stiffen spines and silence dissent. His wife Mrs Lynne Hastings is an equally formidable character, a retired teacher of Modern Native Languages. They both speak Welsh and English.
Outside work, he is President of Lancaster Cricket Club. The iron jawed disciplinarian gives way to a figure of unexpected gentility. In a sporting arena, the brutal pragmatism of the parade ground or the rugged chaos of battle find no purchase. Instead, he governs with a quiet, fastidious grace, conducting all affairs by the exacting ethics and the venerable laws of cricket, ensuring that in peace, everything is played strictly according to the spirit of the game.
The other thing he likes is singing! All the old songs that your mum likes! An inveterate crooner, he particularly likes to do Frank Sinatra and Bobby Darin numbers. With his encouragement, the Garrison Band has learnt a number of pieces and occasionally performs as his backing group.
