One inquisitive little bird perches on the caprail just ahead of her, turning its head to look at her. It\u2019s not a sparrow. With its vivid colours it\u2019s clearly a goldfinch.<\/p>\n Red and black plumage on its face, bold black wings with flashes of bright yellow and a variety of white and tawny feathers across its breast and back. It\u2019s cocked its head to one side.<\/p>\n Slender thinks to herself, \u201coh, how I wish I could be free like you.\u201d<\/p>\n \u00ab You are free? No? \u00bb<\/p>\n Stunned, Slender stares, and quickly adjusts her expression so as not to alarm the bird. She beams with an honest, beautiful, bright smile, and her eyes open wide. Opening as far as they can. She\u2019s never communicated with a bird before. She didn\u2019t know that she could. Perhaps she\u2019s never been close enough.<\/p>\n The signal is a bit gruff though. This bird is now clearly an old man, and one who\u2019s not afraid to be near humans.<\/p>\n Slender definitely wants to explore a dialogue, no matter how old and gruff this male goldfinch is.<\/p>\n \u00ab Freedom! I wish I could fly to freedom! \u00bb<\/p>\n \u00ab I\u2019ve never seen a human flying! \u00bb<\/p>\n \u00ab You\u2019re lucky, you have wings. And gorgeous feathers. \u00bb<\/p>\n \u00ab That\u2019s your problem! You have the wrong type<\/em> of feathers<\/em>! \u00bb<\/p>\n \u00ab You\u2019re somewhat abrupt aren\u2019t you? We\u2019ve only just met! \u00bb<\/p>\n \u00ab Merlin! \u00bb<\/p>\n \u00ab Jenifer. \u00bb<\/p>\n \u00ab I\u2019m Merlin, I\u2019m entitled to be abrupt! Anyway, your feathers are no good. \u00bb<\/p>\n \u00ab We call them clothes! \u00bb<\/p>\n \u00ab We call them feathers! Yours are no good. You\u2019re going to have to find another route to freedom. \u00bb<\/p>\n \u00ab I\u2019m stuck here.
