Ulverston is a charming, honest, little town right at the southern tip of the Lake District, a little nearer to the sea than it once used to be!<\/p>\n

When the ancient railway bridges fell into disrepair, and finally collapsed, the canal was reinvigorated and extended to the foot of Hoad Hill. The area developed gradually and organically, becoming an increasingly more important part of the town. In the shadow of the ruins of the old Sir John Barrow Monument the locals took to calling the new Ford Park Docks<\/em> informally by another name, the Pepper Pot Docks<\/em>. As far as they were concerned the new Pepper Pot Docks simply had to be named in honour of the old tower.<\/p>\n

By 2400AD one canal was no longer enough, so the Chamber had a second one added. Inbound traffic on Salt, and outbound on Pepper! The redevelopment was completed in less than five years but it took another five years before the town\u2019s Chamber agreed that the name the Pepper Pot Docks was so ubiquitous that a relaunch and an official opening was called for.<\/p>\n

An impressive, new stone archway was constructed to mark the event. Two massive new crests were prepared in cast iron, to be placed at the apex on each side. Spanning The Highway, the plaques were designed to be unmissable by anyone travelling in either direction between the docks and the town centre.\u00a0The crest bears the motto Optimum Sufficit<\/em> and above that, instead of Ulverston, the town\u2019s old English name Wulf-heres-tun <\/em>is picked out in raised brickwork.<\/p>\n

The familiar, historic coat of arms stands two metres high and is topped with the helmet of a black knight, surrounded by oak leaves. The wolf right at the top seems to be larger and more real than before.<\/p>\n

Its three red roses represent Lancashire, the town having been in that county long before Wolfland ever existed. The black wolf wears a leather collar and holds a golden sheaf of wheat, representing the tanning industries and the agricultural markets. A gold shield, with a red strike of lighting, and a cross, hang from a chain below the collar. They signify the area\u2019s engineering heritage, electrical industries. And the early Egyptian Ankh cross represents medicine.<\/p>\n

Most impressive is the wolf\u2019s majestic head, breathing fire. The flames signifying the importance of iron smelting to the local economy. The crest bears the motto Optimum Sufficit<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The mayor likes to point out that Optimum Sufficit<\/em> means \u201conly the best will do\u201d.<\/p>\n

From Book 1 \u201cSlenderWolf Conflicts and Alliances\u201d Chapter 9\u00a0Red in the Face<\/em> this extract has NutJob and his employers Franklin and Faraday chatting about Ulverston.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They clear enough space to prepare three mugs of black tea, and they all sit around chatting about wolves.<\/p>\n

\u201cWolves Here Town<\/em>? Almost right,\u201d says Faraday, \u201cFranklin actually did some research on Ulverston, I\u2019m sure she can explain it better than me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a mix of Old Norse and Old English. \u00dalfarr<\/em> means wolf army<\/em> and Tun<\/em> means farmstead<\/em> or village,<\/em>\u201d says Franklin. \u201cSo Ulverston<\/em> actually means the village of the wolf army<\/em>! Which means that Wolves Here Town <\/em>is not too far from the truth.\u201d<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

With their ultra modern buildings, the head office and the Resesarch Institute of Wolfie Windy Water are located on the edge of the town between the new Pepper Pot Docks and the new Leven Reservoir and dam, a stone’s throw from the combined barracks of the Constabulary and Garrison. This is the home of Coconut. She makes a dramatic appearance in Book 2 \u201cSlenderWolf In With the In Crowd\u201d. A three year old Maltese puppy with a small silky, pure white coat, with deep black eyes, a cute black nose, and hanging ears. She’s the office dog and has an expressive face which appears to say \u201cPlease Love Me\u201d, though that belies her reputation for being a bit too bouncy, and too much of a ChatterBox. She is prone to chatting endlessly on the wavelength with KristalClear, and repeatedly demands doggie chocs!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
